THE show of the Gallery Weakend

The Gallery Weekend of Berlin characterizes the art market of the capital in a lot of ways and defines the scene as an internationally well-known place to be: Around the clock galleries open solo and group exhibitions, one event follows another, a shuttle carries the art lovers from here to there and additionally walk-in customers bring numbers and multiplicators. But to whom is this infrastructure accessible? Who truly benefits from this event? For an artist the representation by a gallery or an institution is the inevitable access to the network of collectors, press recognition, art lovers and other protagonists of the scene and by this the main premise is set. Without a representation even temporarily during the Gallery Weekend a visibility is complicated and directly connected to questions of rentability. Small and midsize galleries fight hard for their survival because of increasing rents, the competition around the corner, the VAT of 19 % and a constantly expanding range of tasks.

The solution often lies in outsourcing costs and tasks towards artists: transports, texts, social media, networking, and of course a stable but diverse collectorship and last but not least the free, fresh and independent artistic position which shines strongly for the cultural elite. A lot of galleries close their doors, the scene thins out and the market does what the market does: It selects and the ones who haven’t got enough capital to last are kicked out. But what consequences result of these dynamics? The possibilities for an artist to step into the art market will be constantly decreasing if starting points like small galleries and project spaces disappear more and more. And so the champagne pregnant INDEX shuttle passes the next generation, picks one or the other randomly and luck becomes a stable premise.

Online-platforms for selling art, agents, fairs partly open for artists without a representation by a gallery and the set-up of a studio are measures against the single focus on the work of galleries but they come with the same or even more amount of work. At this point there is a lack of a mediator defining itself as an addition, not in opposition and as a support for the artists in their life and work. The focus lies on an individual management which concentrates on the agenda and realities of artists, delivering support in the processes of exhibition preparations and postproductions, applications for scholarships and prices, insurance and communication, with the aim to offer more capacity and by this more air to breathe and space to work. In this sense we call ourselves RAM – Rebel Art Management as an expression of outsourcing additional processes with a strong urge of rebellion by addressing existing structures in their stagnation and at the same time offering our ideas and abilities as a chance for change.

THE show of the Gallery Weakend offers a platform to 37 young and uprising artists during these important days: The group exhibition is the center of the event, accompanied by a diverse programme consisting of concerts, performances, readings, guided tours and more. It is our set aim to strengthen existing networks by expanding and connecting, with the idea of autonomization through collaboration to offer the present future of culture and art the opportunity it deserves.
